      Symposium: (Volver arriba)

The aim of the Symposium is to provide a forum on ongoing research on plankton studies in fresh water, marine and brackish environments.

No topic within marine ecology and oceanography has changed more in the last decade than our notions about components and structure of planktonic food webs. The microbial food webs, viruses, bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, nano and microplanktonic protozoans are important in the metabolism of aquatic ecosystems. Trophic transfers between microbial and classic food webs and control of the relationship of phytoplankton and microzooplankton are important topics of discussion.

The patterns of seasonal cycles in water columns and the insight that the changes may provide as to how planktonic assemblages are governed  and themes to be discussed.

Also the causes of harmful algal blooms that are not well-established and the related phenomena and mechanisms (control, effects), toxics, introduction of exotic species and implications of long-term (large-scale changes) are topics to be discussed.

In recent years, significant advances have been made in ecosystems modelling as a tool for coastal research, a field of common interest to scientist and managers. Therefore, of particular interest to the Symposium will be the exchange of ideas, findings and strategies in modelling and management of pelagic systems.
